RUMOR: Nintendo to Recall 8 GB Wii U SKU

Recent reports from various GameStop employees have revealed that Nintendo has plans to discontinue production of the 8 GB Wii U basic set. According to these reports, stores have received instructions to return all unsold systems (Basic set) to Nintendo. The recall is scheduled to begin on June 18.

After acknowledging that the Wii U Basic set did not sell as well as the company had hoped, this move does seem all that surprising. It does, however, open doors to the possibility of a price of the 32 GB Deluxe bundle in the near future.

You know what this means? The 8GB version is going to be rare down the road. Things that didn't sell well always end up being more expensive in the long run.

When I read this, I was actually considering on picking up a basic model before the recall went into effect. Who knows how much that is worth on eBay a year from now

Well, in any event, the UK isn't going to discontinue this model. Nintendo UK says that it's still going to be on sale in the UK. See here for more information.

I actually have a Basic 8GB instead of a Deluxe 32GB model, becasue the Deluxe versions were out of stock everywhere when I ordered. So as long as I take good care of my console, it'll be a sought after collector's item.

Well, rumors are just that; rumors. They might be true, but they very well could be untrue, and in this case, it looks like a misinterpretation of Nintendo balancing their inventory.
