Rumor: New 3D Mario game in development for the Wii U?

Here's a rumor that shouldn't come as a surprise: a new 3D Mario game may be in development for the Wii U. According to the rumor, they want to release New Super Mario Bros. U this year, then release the supposed new 3D Mario game next year. Remember, this is just a rumor for right now, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if it ends up being real.

I really wouldn't be surprised either. What has Nintendo's first party devolpment teams been working on all this time? New Super Mario Bros. U? They didn't even have to make a new engine for that. Pikmin 3? That's been in development for years. No, they're definitely working on something else, and it wouldn't come as a surprise for it to be this.

There's almost invariably a 3D Mario platformer released early in a console's lifespan ever since the 64, so for all intents and purposes, this is basically verified fact!
Still, one does wonder what they'll do after the sheer brilliance of the Galaxy games...

I, for one, would like to see them go back to the Super Mario 64 approach: basic and simple. Don't try fancy gimmicks, just blow away the critics with stunning graphics, phenominal gameplay, and great use of the U's touchscreen.
