Masahiro Sakurai has revealed that his team is considering several customization options, for the next Super Smash Bros. games, stating that:

“We’re planning for a level of customization to some degree and in some form".

While cosmetic customization is popular among western games, such as Team Fortress 2, Sakurai has hinted his interest in features such as the customization of attack direction. Although, his team approaches this possibility with great care so that these options do not affect the strength and balance among characters.

Here is what he specifically said:

“It’s not completely decided at this point. But it’s very important to point out that we do this in a careful way that doesn’t affect the strength and balance of the characters. One thing we’d like to do is to be able to customize the direction of attacks. But not give characters a stronger jump or a stronger or weaker attack. You can consider customizations like that possible.”

This was part of an earlier thread I made about the IGN interview with Sakurai. Still, I like the idea of customizing the direction of attacks. That would be an interesting addition to the games.

I almost feel as if customisation of knockback direction could lead to one direction monopolising the others, and reducing the variation if it were too extreme. It also kind of destroys the unique properties of some characters, like Wolf, who has most attacks shoot foes upward. If there were to be this sort of customisation, it would have to be subtle.
