Honestly, I think that Melee had the best art direction. Brawl seemed to try to darken the color pallet and make everything a bit more gritty and serious (Mario and Link are perfect examples of this). I'm glad SSB for Wii U is going more for the Melee style of art.

I honestly disliked Melee's style. There is just something odd about it that i can't put my finger on.
