Hey hey! As we all know, Pokemon X and Pokemon Y were recently announced and are due for release in October. The new generation of the franchise introduces new pokemon and a new approach. Instead of the traditional overview, it now uses a more realistic third person approach.

That's great. But lets forget about that for a moment and focus on something I find interesting. In fact, I've wondered this for many generations of the franchise—How did they come up with the name? Pokemon X... Pokemon Y!

One has to wonder if those have any connection with another factor. So, on to the discussion question. What do you think the X and Y represent.

Here are some of the things others have said on the Internet.

"This opens up a perfect oppourtunity for Pokémon Z, especially considering the three (X,Y,Z) form a 3D coordinate" — luigifrx

"... X is land, Y is sky and Z must be sea. Also, it makes sense because in water - you can travel across and down into the depths (both the X and Y axis)." — Craig Brown

Some have also mentioned chromosomes.

What do you think?

I'm one who goes with the Chromosomes.

Perhaps the theme of the new games will be focused on genetics.

Specializations
Professor Oak of the Kanto region, who studies the relationships between Pokémon and humans.
Professor Elm of the Johto region, who studies Pokémon breeding patterns.
Professor Birch of the Hoenn region, who studies Pokémon habitats.
Professor Rowan of the Sinnoh region, who studies Pokémon evolution.
Professor Juniper of the Unova region, who studies the origins of Pokémon.

- Bulbapedia.

So the new one may study Pokémon genetics.

The new villainous team may focus on that, and it was previewed a little bit in BW2 with Kyurem.
