Why Sakurai doesn't want to bring characters from fighting games into the next Super Smash Bros. games
As great as fans might think they would be, Sakurai isn't too big on bringing characters from fighting games into the next Super Smash Bros. games. The reason is because they wouldn't bring something unique to the games, being that they are from other fighting games. Here's what he had to say about this:
“The biggest feature we look at in Smash Bros. is, ‘What does this character bring to Smash Bros. that other characters don’t?’ If you look at… someone from a fighting game already, and people like fighting with this character, from my point of view, it’s like ‘this guy does what this guy already does. He fills the role that this character already has. So while you may like this character and he’s interesting, that doesn’t really merge well, here.”

Re: Why Sakurai doesn't want to bring characters from fighting games into the next Super Smash Bros. games
Sometimes it seems like Sakurai has a logic trail, but then he jumps before he reaches the end of it, then makes a not entirely logical decision based on where he stopped.
"Don't have two characters with the same role."
Makes sense.
"Fighting game characters aren't unique enough for Smash Bros."
Um...no?
"Fox, Falco, and Wolf can all have the same Final Smash."
Goddammit.
