One of the biggest concerns the gaming industry, today, is the rise of mobile gaming in smartphones. In fact, the question of whether or not the handheld gaming business will seise to exist in the near future has been asked at multiple occasions. Today, Satoru Iwata, global president of Nintendo, has made a case stating that:

"I think that if we are able to provide experiences on handheld devices that consumers cannot get on another device, then we will continue creating software and hardware going forward, and if it comes to a point when we're not able to do that, I think, yeah, you will see portable handheld gaming devices go the way of the Dodo, I guess."

Iwata appears to be fully aware about the rapidly changing industry and seems to understand why some people argue that the period of gaming handhelds "has passed us by" due to the rapidly growing popularity of smartphones. Why not just play a game on a device you carry around with you all the time?

What are your thoughts about this rising concern? Do you believe that gaming on a dedicated handheld system is headed on a road to failure?

I dislike playign games on my phone and I doubt those games will surpass Nintendo's handheld games.

It's just hard to compare them.

The phone games are simple, WarioWare-like games that are fun for like a week and then the fad goes away. Look at Angry Birds, Draw Something, etc.

DS & 3DS games are different, they are full games that most offer a nice in-depth experience. Although there is shovelware as well.

Nintendo shouldn't be worried as they shouldn't depend on casual/shovel-ware games for sales. They should focus on the 1st party games along with competent 3rd parties.
